Identity theft has been around for as long as there have been identities to steal. However, with the introduction of Internet, identity theft has increased and become more specialized over the past years. Girobank will therefore never send you unsolicited emails to verify personal data, passwords, Personal Identification Numbers (PIN), credit card numbers and/or account numbers. These furthermore are a few tips to avoid becoming a victim:

Personal information

1.   Do not provide your personal information to unknown persons;

2. When disposing of documents containing personal information, please do this in safe manner by shredding said documents first or at least making personal data invisible;

3. Do not leave documents containing personal information behind in your vehicle;

4. Do not disclose personal data, passwords, Personal Identification Numbers (PIN), credit card numbers and/or account numbers via unsolicited email correspondence;

5. Do not update your data on any website other than your secure online banking system after logging in;

6.      Never write down your PIN or any of your passwords or other login information;

7.  Do not disclose your PIN to anyone;

8.  Cover your hand when typing your PIN at ATM’s and Point of Sale terminals;

9. Do not select passwords incorporating birthdays of yourself or close relatives to access web services such as, but not limited to: email, social network accounts and/or online banking systems;

10. Change your passwords periodically (for example: every 2 months);

Firewall and anti-virus

11.  Install an anti-virus software on your computer, update this software as soon as newer versions are released and run your anti virus software on a daily basis;

12. Make sure to have a firewall management program in place, in order to block the spread of computer attacks;

Overall online security

13.   When using your email, make sure to always log out when you are done;

14. When using internet banking, make sure to always log out when you are done;
